Icon Written by jgshort on January 11, 2010 – 9:40 PM

In Part I, I discussed the idea of installing a Gentoo partition on my machine. Part II delved into the why and how of starting out, including my initial frustrations of installing Gentoo on a fresh Bootcamp partition. Part III discussed the rage and horror I felt when I thought I lost my data after [...]

Git and the Single Developer

Icon Written by jgshort on January 10, 2010 – 10:02 PM

While I’m not at work or performing contracting duties, I write my own software in C. Obviously I require a revision control system and I’ve opted at this time for git. In previous posts I’ve made no secret of my love for git. It’s a simple, elegant and fast revision control system that works just [...]

Gentle Gentoo, Part II

Icon Written by jgshort on January 8, 2010 – 11:37 PM

In Part I, I discussed the idea of installing a Gentoo partition on my machine. For the uninitiated, Gentoo is a Linux distribution with a source-based package management system: Applications are compiled to your native machine architecture and, fundamentally, Gentoo is designed to be completely customized… from the kernel up. Gentle Gentoo, Part I

Icon Written by jgshort on January 7, 2010 – 10:11 PM

Last Friday, 9:00 PM: It’s one of those quiet evenings at home: The kid’s asleep, the spouse is watching TV. I’m sitting at my desk once again debugging some nasty code (but really I’m just checking Facebook). My machine hums away, OS X chugs along just fine. Technically everything is as it should be. SourceSafe to Vault to Subversion to Git?

Icon Written by jgshort on December 10, 2008 – 6:00 PM

I’ve used many-a revision control tools during my software development career, beginning with Visual Source Safe, migrating to SourceGear’s Vault followed by a long and fantastic relationship with Subversion and now, in my own personal projects, git. By far my favorite has been git. Ladies and gentleman, I’m telling you now: Distributed revision control is [...]

Seen on Slicehost’s tweet today: Ludwig Petterson has created a sweet little Dashboard widget for OS X that monitors your Slicehost instances. It uses your Slicehost API, so make sure you enable API access under the SliceManage console first. Pretty great!!

Site Upgrade: WordPress 2.7 RC2

Icon Written by jgshort on December 9, 2008 – 9:57 PM

I was pretty content downloading the nightly WordPress build every other day or so. However, stoopad.com is now on 2.7 RC2 and I’m probably going to leave it there until the final 2.7 release. Very solid, I love it. The upgrade tool, by the way, is fantastic, I couldn’t be happier with the one-button-upgrade process. [...]
